New Delhi: The diet trends of 2019, according to a recent survey, showed that the intermittent fasting, and the Keto diet, were the most popular diets for weight loss, in 2019. The vegan diet may have not made to the top list for weight loss, but it is definitely considered one of the top diets for overall health. As the trend of the vegan diet grew in 2019, so did another skincare trend, based on the same ‘all-plant based products’ theme. The trend has been called ‘vegan skin care’.

What is vegan skincare?

The idea of a vegan diet, or vegan way of living, does not come from the idea of just being healthy. It is also attributed to love and care for animals, and the environment overall, and a more sustainable idea of living.

People who follow veganism, try to avoid animal-based products in all areas of their life, and not just diet. Vegan skincare, therefore, simply refers to skincare products that do not contain any animal-based ingredients.

How is vegan skincare different from cruelty-free skincare?

Very often, we hear in commercials for skincare products that they have been ‘dermatologically tested’. We also hear or read that they are ‘cruelty-free.’ cruelty-free products only mean that they were not tested on animals, and even if they were, they were harmless. Vegan skincare, on the other hand, means that these products do not contain any ingredients derived from animals, irrespective of how harmless their derivation or extraction was.

What are the common animal-based ingredients present in skincare products?

Some common animal-based products, that often even go unnoticed in skincare and cosmetic products are –

  • Beeswax
  • Collagen
  • Keratin
  • Honey
  • Silk
  • Elastin
  • Hyaluronic acid
  • Lanolin
  • Squalene

Should you try out the vegan skincare trend in the New Year 2020?

While the vegan skincare trend has been gaining popularity in the year 2019, vegan products have not become a common sight in all make-up pouches in the country.

If or not you should try the skincare products, depends on your choice, among other factors. The vegan skincare idea is definitely more sustainable, and animal and environment-friendly. Many people, who have extremely sensitive skin have also benefited from vegan skincare products.

Since plant-based products are considered better for your skin, in theory, vegan skincare may not do any harm, if it does not make your skin better, that is for sure. Vegan products also contain fewer ingredients, which makes it easier for you to understand what works well for your skin, since finding the right skincare happens after a lot of trial and error. Plant-based products also contain many vitamins and minerals, which can make your skin healthy, and nourished.
